What is emergency succession planning?

Emergency Succession Planning is a formalized process of making critical decisions before an unplanned transition presents itself. In preparing for an unplanned, emergency situation the first step is to be able to name the type of situation the ministry finds itself confronted with. There are four primary categories.

Imminent Temporary –

A transition expected to occur soon and will have a short-term impact. The incumbent will return to their position after a temporary absence. Examples: Maternity leave due to pregnancy or a medical diagnosis requiring short-term care.

Imminent Permanent –

A transition expected to occur soon and will have a lasting impact, as the incumbent will not return to their position. Examples: A medical diagnosis requiring permanent leave or the leader leaving for a new opportunity.

Immediate Temporary –

An unexpected transition that has already occurred and will have a short-term impact. The incumbent is expected to return to their position. Examples: A car accident or heart attack requiring temporary leave for recovery.

Immediate Permanent –

An unexpected transition that has already occurred and will have a lasting impact, as the incumbent will not return to their position. Examples: An unexpected death or a family situation requiring permanent leave.

The Emergency Succession Policy Template included in this resource will help you quickly write a policy that addresses all four categories listed above
